Tradition. Fans and players turn and wave to patients at the adjacent children's hospital (the Kinnick Wave); the visitors' locker room is famously painted pink.
Seating & views
Kinnick Stadium seats about 69,250 in a classic oval bowl with a lower bowl and upper deck, ringed by one main concourse. A renovation finished before the 2019 season rebuilt the north end zone with box seating, outdoor club seats and a larger scoreboard. Premium options include club seats and suites with private lounges. The student section, the Hawks Nest, fills sections 117, 119, 121 to 123 and 219 to 221. Kinnick's best-known tradition is the Wave, when fans and players turn to wave at patients watching from the University of Iowa Stead Family Children's Hospital next door.
Parking & tailgating
Kinnick sits on the west side of the University of Iowa campus, and its lots are passholder-only on game days. Public day-of parking is at the Finkbine Golf Course, Lower Finkbine and Softball lots ($40 per car, $100 per RV), all cashless, and the Hancher, Hawkeye Commuter and Hall of Fame lots are free with Cambus shuttles starting two hours before kickoff. Lots open six hours before kickoff, never before 6 a.m. Tailgating is a big part of the day: beer and wine are allowed in lots, hard liquor is not, and LP or charcoal grills are fine outside ramps. Check Iowa's official football parking page, since details change.
